What a tiring weekend

Well, ultimately I accomplished nothing over the weekend, I did however finish this picture:

Legend of Zelda
but beyond that I was pretty useless...

Instead of productivity here's some more interesting links...

Minus
This is a really clean and simple picture host I've been using lately.

Gun Blood
Ridiculously addictive quickdraw game...play at your own risk.

Color Scheme Designer
Pretty cool little Flash color scheme designer, good if you're stuck.

Comsat Angels - After the Rain
This song has been stuck in my head all day...

And this is the best thing I've seen in awhile:

FUCK YEAH!!

Links and a WIP

Trying to avoid link puns, all I've got today is some more of my favorite links ever of the day and a picture of Link the Hero of Time from the Legend of Zelda.

This is a WIP I've got about 4 hours into this one but hopefully before my head hits the pillow tonight I'll have time to finish it. If you wanna see more of my drawings click on the gallery on the right side of the page -->

I encourage you to view the high-res version.
My Favorite Links Ever Today

Zelda Re-orchestrated
This is what inspired me to start a Zelda drawing, every Legend of Zelda game soundtrack completely reorchestrated...seriously all of them...even like oracle of season stuff...oh yeah and it's fucking free to Download!

CRCR - "Todor & Petru"
This is the most insane inspired and pleasing music video I've seen in years. Seriously, this is fucking awesome.

Pose Maniacs
If you ever need anatomy reference (and you don't have friends or like fucking with Poser [like me]) you'll basically never need to go anywhere else.

Hopefully soon I'll have some cooler stuff to post up here, until then slow and steady is the pace.

Alright

WELL, first off I'm 17 days without a cigarette so that's something...

"...although there has been a rise in murderous rage since last month..."

Second I got a drawing featured here. This is a pretty badass project, basically they're making a really dark, mature Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles graphic novel with gorgeous artwork. No ETA yet but certainly worth checking out at www.dawnoftheninja.com

I also just finished another digital painting but I can't post it yet as it is a birthday present for someone that might check my blog, so look for it in the next couple of weeks.

Things on the production company front are moving fast, we're about to start purchasing equipment including 2 Panasonic HD Cameras, some really nice mics and a fucking laundry list of other shit. It's gonna get pretty real in the next few months.

We're also writing some short scripts for equipment tests, mostly sketch comedy kind of things. Sort of have this idea to do sketch comedy, but have every sketch based in the same universe. So that there might be the option of weaving together a single story arc out of all of them eventually if we like how they turn out. Kind of like League of Gentlemen or to a lesser extent Snuff Box but in a sort of post-apocalyptic setting.

Also I would like to take a minute to thank the ladies and fellows a Blu E-Cigs because without their product I probably wouldn't be quitting smoking right now. If you want to try and quit smoking I highly recommend the e-cigarette as a nicotine cessation method, and as e-cigarettes go it doesn't get any more affordable or higher quality than Blu. They really have a nice product.

My Favorite Links Ever Today

If we don't, remember me.
I'm not even sure how to describe this, basically this is animated .gif's as art.

Zoe Keating - "Escape Artist"
Red Fang - "Prehistoric Dog"
The Dead Brothers - "Dead Brother's Stomp"
Some music I've been listening to lately.

Weta Workshop Weapons
Did you know you can buy badass replicas of the District 9 guns from Weta themselves? Time to get a new credit card...

Your Uncle's Lap
And as always my podcast. New episode every week! Recorded live on Stickam every Thursday @ 10pm CST!

Anyways that's all I've got today, time to go back down into the shop. Oh yeah in case you didn't know I'm a machinist in real life.

Slow Weekend

Not a lot going on news-wise. Slow and steady. Spent part of the weekend at Austin Comicon which was radical, but other than that it's been a work-heavy weekend.

This has kept me entertained for a few days:
Cubee Craft

Campground Pirate Radio, this is like KnR from Fallout 3...
Campground Pirate Radio

Check out the podcast, we've recorded a new episode.

Quick Update

Last one of these I promise.

Just put the finishing touches on the "Filmageddon" Logo Sequence.

More Logo Sequences

Ok so I tweeked the Dirt Road Logo a bit.

And I did a first pass for the "Filmageddon" Logo Sequence:

It's not at all finished but it's a start, more of a test than anything.

Dirt Road Logo

Still recovering from quitting smoking but I just finished up a quick logo sequence for the Dirt Road logo. Nothing too fancy but it's at least worth looking at.

I think it's pretty neat. Probably going to mess with it some more though.

I also did this little sequence for my friend Greg's outfit.

Production Company Headway

Me and the George have spent the passed few days building a business model for our newly founded "Dirt Road Productions". We also just put together our first logo sheet.

I think we're both pretty pleased with the way these turned out.
Not a whole lot else to report, but that's more than I've had in awhile. Steady as she goes.

Quitting Smoking Day 6

I finally feel a little better. I don't constantly crave a cigarette now I'm just generally annoyed. I think part of that is in fact chemical addiction and the other part is that I really like smoking, I wish I didn't have to quit...this sucks...oh well I'm almost a full week cigarette free.

Here's a protip:
If your girlfriend smokes and you smoke, you should quit at the same time, but probably at a point when you won't see each other for about a week. As much as it has been encouraging to quit with a partner I'm pretty sure we've almost murdered each other a few times this weekend.

That's me on the left and Georgie on the right (artists representation).

Link Dump

Trying not to work on anything too important while I quit smoking because I feel like I would break it, so instead of progress on anything I'll just keep posting links that I think are cool.

Game Gun
This guy built a low budget, badass VR Gaming gun that actually works using a gyroscopic mouse ( I think?). I'm gonna see what all goes into this and might be building one for myself, wouldn't cost much more than 100 bucks.

Fifth Element Opera
Not typically something I would post on here but it brought back a lot of memories. This lovely lady sings the Blue Diva's opera from the Fifth Element without any kind of vocal enhancement. Pretty radical.
Also this if you're in the mood for more opera after that last link. Natalie Dessay is my favorite Queen of the Night.

No Sleep
The "no sleep" section of Reddit ensures that I in fact get no fucking sleep. There's a lot of bullshit on this but it's all in good fun.

Blind Squirrel Props
Prop builder, very interesting and inspiring stuff.

And as always Your Uncle's Lap me and my friends podcast where we talk about anything and everything. On this weeks episode we interview a late bloomer who lost his virginity to a MILF on Halloween.
We broadcast live every Thursday at 10 p.m. central here
And if you miss the live broadcast you can always d/l or stream the episodes from our website or iTunes.

And if you're a fan of the show don't forget to subscribe!

Day 3 of No-Smoking

Ok instead of just bitch about how much I want a cigarette and then get frustrated from teasing myself I've decided to create a list of pros and cons.

Cons first:
I want a cigarette
I have a slight headache
coughing up shit

Pros:
Breathing feels better already
I slept like a fucking baby last night
apart from withdrawal symptoms I feel like a million bucks today
coughing up shit
in 3 days of not smoking I've saved over 15$ on cigarettes

It's getting a little easier, mentally at least. I'm too far in to go back now.

Like this but more soothing and lovely...

Links

Today I don't have a lot of interesting things to report so I'll just post up some of my favorite links for the week.

Video Copilot
Video Copilot has taught me more than should even be allowed, if you're seriously considering visual effects fuck college and just buy everything Andrew Kramer sells. Also most of the knowledge he offers is completely free, seriously, it blew my mind as well the first time, just go watch the free tutorials.

Wall Base
My friend Ryan turned me on to this, basically just a huge high-resolution picture gallery. A metric shitload of desktop backgrounds that's completely searchable. Great for inspiration or just browsing.

Art of the Title
This website has a huge gallery of intro title sequences to movies and TV shows. A great source of inspiration.

and as per usual...

Your Uncle's Lap
Me and my friends podcast! Episode 42 just went up and it's not too bad (although we were admittedly rusty).

Weekend was pretty rad

So this weekend was pretty radical, Podcast went well on Thursday, woke up Friday and drove to Arlington where me and Georgie went to Six Flags. Saturday morning we got up early drove my parents house for the family Halloween party which was completely insane complete with a giant inflatable slide, carnival games with a prize booth and more food than you could ever eat. We left there about 9pm and drove 3 hours back to Austin where we repaired our Halloween costumes and drove to Amber's party, stuck around there for about an hour then went to Tessa's Halloween/Birthday party, and then came home. Sunday we woke up repaired Halloween costumes again, watched a few Vincent Price movies and then went downtown with Greg for Halloween extravaganza. Sometime around 2:30 we got home. I'm completely exhausted, but it was a hell of a weekend.

Aren't we just adorable?

Before I go to bed

So I found this picture:

And I stared at it for a few minutes and became absolutely overwhelmed with a complete sense of hopelessness. Nothing we do matters, it's all so small and insignificant and pointless...just look at that thing! Whatever the fuck it is, we're pointless, we're a speck on a speck in the middle of a slightly larger speck and its all completely and utterly meaningless!!!

...and for some reason I decided I needed to share my newly acquired despair, so I sent the link to my lovely girlfriend Georgie.

And as usual with infinitely more insight into the universe than I could ever possess she responded, simply:

 "Yipes!"

I love her.

Motivation

I have a lot of trouble motivating myself to work sometimes. Some days you literally couldn't stop me from working on the shit I want to work on but some days I can't seem to peel myself off the couch. I think I'm bi-polar. Today was a down day.

I hate it, I've got about ten thousand things I want/need to work on but I just can't seem to get off my ass and do it. Lists sometimes help maybe I'll try that. Anyway its too late to do anything productive tonight so I guess I get a free pass to continue to be a piece of shit for the rest of the day. Hooray.

This is about right.

Tuesday, October 26, 2010

Welp, here we are...

Welcome to my brand spanking new blog!

Here I'm going to discuss topics related, but not limited, to the creation of my very own production company, prop building, upcoming projects (anything from video games and programs I'm working on to special effects), films and video games, as well as anything I think might be interesting.

Please check back frequently as I'm going to do my best to update every other day or so with, at the very least, some interesting links!

Until then here's some things that have kept me occupied for the passed few days:

This guy makes amazing props and does an exceptional job documenting their creation.
Volpin Props

The making of Jurassic Park, this is really fascinating especially if you have even a small amount of interest in special effects. Seriously, them making this movie in 1993 is comparable to us going to the moon in the 60's...well...almost...
 Part 1 Part 2  Part 3  Part 4 Part 5 Part 6

Also completely unrelated to special effects I've found these DVDs to be a really good watch if you have any interest in firearms, specifically tactical uses. I'm writing a script right now centered around characters that really know their way around guns and this has proven to be oh so inspirational.
Magpul Dynamics

And one final thing I'll be plugging every post more than likely is my podcast where me and my two friends talk about everything from movies to being a man to toilets that explode like poop volcanoes*.
Your Uncle's Lap

Stay tuned for more!

*most of what we talk about ends up being poop or dick related.
